Learning Together: Building Leadership Across ABSS

Relaunched in 2025, the Teacher Leadership Academy (TLA) began a new two-year journey with more than 60 educators from across the Alamance-Burlington School System. Now in its sixth cohort, the program brings together passionate teachers who are committed to growing as leaders and deepening their understanding of the community they serve. By creating space for shared learning and collaboration, TLA strengthens educators’ ability to lead within their classrooms, their schools, and across the district.

Throughout the first year of the program, participants spent full days learning alongside local leaders, organizations, and businesses to explore how education intersects with broader community systems. Sessions focused on understanding community needs, advancing equity and belonging, strengthening leadership and wellness, and exploring local industries and career pathways—including agriculture and emerging technologies.

These experiences broadened perspectives and encouraged courageous conversations, helping educators connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities and bring fresh ideas back to their schools.

An integral part of the Academy is the Creativity Grant program, which provides up to $20,000 for educator-led, student-centered projects. Inspired by what they learn through TLA, participants have begun turning ideas into action—creating flexible learning environments, sensory spaces, interactive agricultural experiences, and history exhibits that spark curiosity and engagement. These projects reflect the power of equipping educators with both resources and community connections.

As participants move into the second year of the Teacher Leadership Academy, they will continue to deepen their leadership practice, strengthen collaboration across schools, and expand innovative approaches to teaching and learning. By investing in educators through TLA, Impact Alamance is supporting stronger school systems and helping ensure students across Alamance County are better prepared for school, careers, and life—today and into the future.
