Building Belonging: Community Vision
Drives Elon Skatepark Forward
In 2025, Impact Alamance helped move a long-held community vision closer to reality by committing $103,000 toward the development of a new skatepark in Alamance County. Rooted in the aspirations of local residents, the project reflects years of advocacy and a shared desire for inclusive, accessible spaces where people can gather, play, and belong.
This support included an initial $75,000 allocation in January 2025, incorporating the reallocation of $45,000 from a previously approved Connector project in the Town of Elon that could not be completed. In September 2025, Impact Alamance committed an additional $28,000 in grant funding. All funds were directed to the Town of Elon, which endorsed the project in May 2024 and designated land at Beth Schmidt Park as its future home.
What began as a grassroots dream among local skaters and enthusiasts has grown into a movement powered by community passion. For years, members of the Elon Skatepark Coalition—a volunteer-led group—have been the driving force behind this effort. They’ve advocated, organized, and fundraised, earning support from local municipal leaders, funders, and businesses. The group envisions the skatepark as a welcoming space where people of all ages can come together, develop relationships, and build community.
More than a skatepark, this project will create a valuable third space—a gathering spot beyond home, school, or work where folks can come together to build a sense of belonging and place. The park will offer a safe, inclusive environment for kids, teens, and adults to skateboard, bike, rollerblade, and ride scooters. Because it will be free and open to all, the park will open doors for families across all income levels, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to play.
This investment is especially meaningful for teens in our community, who’ve expressed the need for safe, welcoming spaces to simply exist and build relationships during the For Alamance Youth Wellness Team’s public listening sessions. The skatepark will give them, and the entire community, a place to belong, grow, and thrive.
Impact Alamance is proud to support this vision and looks forward to celebrating its opening with the community. Together, we’re building connection, health, and opportunity for generations to come.
