Starting Strong: Ready Freddy Helps Close Early Learning Gaps

In June 2025, 45 rising kindergarteners from across Alamance County graduated from Ready Freddy School Readiness Camp, a program designed to help children and parents in the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) make a smooth and confident transition to kindergarten.  This milestone represents more than just a celebration—it’s an investment in the future success of these young learners.

Kindergarten readiness is critical, and research consistently shows that it predicts later academic achievement. Children who enter school prepared have stronger literacy and math levels by sixth grade and are significantly more likely to graduate from high school.

These early years matter because 90% of brain development occurs by the age of five, the typical age for entering kindergarten. When children miss out on certified early childhood development opportunities—such as high-quality pre-k or licensed childcare—they often begin school at a disadvantage compared to peers who did have access to those experiences.

Ready Freddy was created to help close these gaps. Through the collaboration of ABSS teachers and administrators, the program provides families with a free, accelerated experience that builds the social, emotional, academic, and motor skills children need to thrive in school-based learning. By equipping both kids and parents with tools for success, Ready Freddy lays a strong foundation for K-12 achievement and lifelong learning.

Programs like Ready Freddy are more than preparation, they are a promise. A promise that every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
