Strengthening Community Wellness Through New Basketball Courts in Mebane

In a growing community, access to safe and reliable places to play matters. For years, Mebane’s outdoor basketball courts have been limited by their location in a residential neighborhood, where lighting restrictions kept play confined to daylight hours. By relocating and expanding courts at the Mebane Arts and Community Center (MAC), the city is creating a more flexible and welcoming space that meets rising demand for recreational opportunities and supports physical activity year-round.

Impact Alamance awarded a $40,000 grant to the Mebane Recreation and Parks Department to help make this vision possible. The new outdoor courts will feature proper lighting for evening use, designated youth-only play times, and the capacity to host tournaments—opening the door to broader community participation and engagement. Basketball has long been a powerful tool for bringing people together, particularly youth from different schools and neighborhoods, and these courts will ensure consistent, inclusive access for players of all ages.

This investment advances Impact Alamance’s Healthier priority area by strengthening both individual well-being and the community’s collective capacity to thrive. By supporting spaces that encourage physical activity, positive social interaction, and safe connection, Impact Alamance is partnering to ensure the Mebane Arts and Community Center continues to serve as a hub for wellness—fostering health, hope, and opportunity for Mebane’s residents now and into the future.
