News that Empowers: Introducing The Alamance Fabric

A healthy community depends on people being informed, connected, and able to participate in decisions that affect their lives. In Alamance County, residents have consistently raised concerns about the loss of accessible, trustworthy local news and the impact that gap has on civic engagement and community connection. Through listening sessions and research conducted with partners, it became clear that reliable local information is not just a service—it is critical infrastructure that supports trust, participation, and shared understanding.

To address this need, Impact Alamance invested $125,000 in NC Local to launch a nonprofit local news and information initiative for Alamance County. This investment builds on a 2024 feasibility study conducted with NC Local’s predecessor, the NC Local News Workshop at Elon University, which confirmed strong community demand for a credible, nonpartisan digital news source. The initiative is designed to help residents better understand local issues, see how decisions affect their daily lives, and feel more connected to what’s happening in their community.

Impact Alamance selected NC Local because of its proven commitment to community-centered journalism and its experience building news ecosystems that serve residents equitably. NC Local’s model prioritizes listening, collaboration, and transparency—working alongside communities rather than simply reporting on them. With the infrastructure and expertise to support sustainable, locally relevant news, NC Local is uniquely positioned to help Alamance County pilot a new approach to local journalism rooted in public service.

The initiative launched with a community event in November 2025 and released its first edition, The Alamance Fabric, in early 2026. More than a news product, it is a platform for connection—inviting feedback, elevating local voices, and strengthening civic life. By investing in trusted local journalism, Impact Alamance is advancing its mission to build a healthier community - one where residents are informed, engaged, and better equipped to work together toward a shared future.
